In Ethnography one of the points truly stood out for me when it spoke about how research you find may bring meaning to you as well as interest you. I can relate to this very much so in the CLUE project. At first beginning the project I did not understand where I was going with the data I found or what I wanted to do with the observations and inferences I was making, but then it dawned on me on how much the aspect of clubs play in the role of college students. The data I found related to me because I wanted to further understand clubs and the meaning behind them in the lives of students. I want to understand why students choose the clubs they do because this is something that interests me most. It then goes into talking about how once you found the research that interests you the most, questions could be more specific to get the most out of what you want to find out. By doing this through interviews, or documentations, you can than examine the research further.
In Ethnography when I said, “to want to prove one’s theory of why something happens the way it does cannot be the motivation for ethnography”. I thought this statement was very interesting because I would have thought that this in fact would be the reason. In CLUE I find myself thinking of reasons of why something is the way it is, like when looking at dorm rooms and thinking students who typically have messy rooms are male rooms, and those that are organized are typically females. I thought that this theory was interesting and made me want to further this study by finding male rooms that were messy, but it reality I was surprised to find that this wasn’t the case. In fact, there were about the same amount of messy male rooms as there were female rooms.
